The "Athens Rotary Club Community Service Person of the Year Award" is given to an Athens community member who exemplifies fellowship and the ideals of Rotary as interpreted by the Rotary Motto "Service Above Self".  The 2018 Award was presented to Thomas O’Grady at the Annual Holiday Party on Dec. 10, 2018.
Thomas O’Grady was nominated by Rotarian Mary Diles.  He was instrumental in successfully moving the Southeast Ohio History Center to its new location at 24 W. State St., Athens, OH.  Thomas (an Astronomy Instructor at Ohio University for more than 30 years) has been a member of the board of the Southeast Ohio History Center since 1999 and became Executive Director of the Center in 2014.  The ribbon cutting ceremony for the History Center at its new location took place on April 12th.  Tom’s efforts with the historical society have made a tremendous impact in preserving the history of the Athens area for future generations.  Tom’s ability to work with community members and preserve our heritage made him an excellent choice for Athens Rotary’s Community Award.  Tom’s efforts exemplify “Service Above Self” throughout our area.
