This year, about 52 local families received Thanksgiving Food Baskets on Monday, November 19, 2018.
The Rotary Club of Athens has been hosting Food Baskets for the Community for at least 12 years.  Since 2008, Thanksgiving Food Baskets for local families have been sponsored by Rotarians and Walmart in conjunction with The Athens County Children's Services (ACCS).  Every year since 2013, we have applied for, and received, a matching grant from our Rotary District which, with the help of donations from Rotarians and Walmart, allowed us to serve at least 50 local families in conjunction with ACCS.   In recent years Athens Rotarian Betsy Baringer has led the project with the help of a loyal group of Athens Rotarian volunteers, Walmart, and the ACCS Staff.  Beyond funding, the project requires a lot of hauling, carrying, packing, etc. during the few days when the food is obtained, boxes (the food baskets) packed, and delivered.
Betsy reported that this year we were assisted greatly by 15 students from the Athens High School Rotary Interact Club (this was coordinated by Athens Rotary President Brandon Elliott); in addition to Rotarian volunteers Tara Gilt (with Jack -- her adorable baby!), Lois Gerig, Karen Vedder, Jeanne Heaton, Brandon Elliott, Paul Cadamagnani, Margy Kramer, Betsy Baringer, Diane McVey with her husband Craig Johnson, Calvin James, Dave Diggle, Sarah Baker and Shane Jarrett; and Cathy Hill and 8 staff with ACCS.
Thank You to all who volunteered to help with the project and to all those who contributed funds to the project again this year!
